The Girl with the Louding Voice
13 journalers for this copy...
After her mother dies, Adunni's father can no longer afford to live the way he used to, and he isn't interested in educating a girl - so he sells her off to an older man as a third wife. But Adunni doesn't want marriage, her mother told her that education would give her a voice, and Adunni wants a louding voice. Her dream is to become a teacher and to help the village children to learn. Forced to run from her village, Adunni travels to Lagos to live with a wealthy family, but her life is not improved. Despite the awful things that happen to her, she is still determined to learn, and while some resent her joyful spirit, she will not keep quiet. I absolutely love this, I was very quickly caught up in Adunni's story and found it hard to put down, though it's awful to think there may be girls in Nigeria going through this sort of thing today.

The book is with me now. It looks really great! I will hold on to it until January, though, since the roundabout does not officially start until January and I still have a couple of books from the last roundabout to catch up on. :)

What an amazing beginning to this year's roundabout! I know next to nothing about life in Nigeria, though i have to admit that I'm not too surprised about the way things are going both for the rich and the poor. i enjoyed the insight into a world that is very unknown to me. But at the same time, I thought the book was extremely powerful and well written. The linguistic tools used made it that much better. I stumbled while reading the first few sentences but very soon was able to hear the Nigerian voice. As Adunni's English improved (and also her general education), the language in the book changed as well.
Thanks for sharing greenbadger!
I'll send the book off to the next reader before the weekend.

This was a great read! Adunni's story was captivating despite all things that happened to her. As grovalskii noted about the change in Adunni's use of English, I was also fascinated by the way the author used it to reflect Adunni finding her own voice. An impressive book, thank you for sending it in the roundabout.

I enjoyed the book very much. Adunni is a wonderful character. And I liked the author's use of language as Adunni continued to seek her louding voice. She goes through such a lot, but her determination is wonderful. Thanks for sharing!

First negative review, my bad! Found it quite hard to warm up to the main character Adunni and the plot was all over the place. The end is disappointing as I was hoping to know if she would realize her dream... But kudos to the author for shining a light on the conditions of young girls in Nigeria, just dreadful. 4* Thanks for sharing, greenbadger.

I really enjoyed this story that had wonderful (as well as horrific) characters and gave me some insight into Nigerian culture and history. It's very brutal in places, but the author softens the tone with Adunni's humour and optimism.
Thank you, greenbadger, for offering this book to the roundabout!

I really enjoyed the book too. It is sad how horrible the fate of women still is in modern Nigeria. It is not only the poor girls like Adunni that suffer, but rich, strong and powerful women like Big Madam and liberated and educated ones like Ms. Tia.

Had one of those weird moments of synchronicity that makes life so strange! Had pulled this book out as next to read, but while eating tea decided to catch up on some recorded TV from ages ago. Flicked onto 'Between the Covers' with Sara Cox and guess which book they were reviewing?
Anyways. I digress!
This is not the sort of book I would have picked up myself, but I kind of became fascinated by Adunni's life and her ability to keep fighting to have her own voice. What happens to her is tragic and horrible, and yet you can't really say that any of the people are really 'bad guys' - they're all stuck in situations and ways of life that limit their empathy and understanding. I think that's why the characters that really stood out for me were Khadija, Kofi and Tia who try to buck the system and be kind.
I'm glad I got to read this surprising read.

This is a powerful, beautifully written book about a sickening system of abuse. It’s horrific to imagine the lives of those who don’t have a Kofi and Ms Tia riding to the rescue. Thank you Greenbadger for introducing me to another book I just wouldn’t have seen for the trees! I love mixed metaphors.

I have already read this as part of my book group so here is my review from then.
I was a little put off by the language at the beginning but you soon attune your ear. The whole book gives a very real feel for the different aspects of life there, especially the life of women. But it shows the divide is not just male/female but also class... It explores the extreme poverty of parts of both rural and urban Nigeria and it pulls no punches in describing some of the terrible suffering of those born 'without'. It also paints a very true picture of the contrasting lifestyle of the more affluent parts of Lagos, with a particular emphasis on those who have 'made it', their inner insecurities and competition with each other, while their servants often lead a life of drudgery.
