«Il prato in fondo al mare è un racconto-labirinto e nello stesso tempo un itinerario magico, un'inquietante metafora che prende l'aspetto di un giallo, di un racconto di mare, di un'inchiesta giornalistica» (Cesare Garboli) 4 marzo 1861: parte da Palermo il battello a vapore Ercole, con a bordo Ippolito Nievo, in viaggio verso Napoli per riportare i documenti della spedizione garibaldina dei Mille cui aveva preso parte. Ma la nave Ercole nel corso di una violenta tempesta scompare nel nulla. Nessun superstite, nessuna traccia, nessuna inchiesta che riesca a capire cosa è accaduto. 5 marzo 1961: in occasione del centenario della scomparsa di Ippolito Nievo, Stanislao, suo pronipote, viene abbagliato da un flash, che interpreta come un invito a riaprire le indagini su quella morte misteriosa. Stanislao Nievo dedica dieci anni della sua vita a raccogliere i materiali utili per ricostruire le fila di questo capitolo di storia patria. Così la vicenda di Nievo si sdoppia e si aggroviglia in tante storie diverse, e le ricerche non sono meno avventurose e romanzesche della fine leggendaria del vascello Ercole.
