From Kirkus Reviews
A mix of murder and magic in the Florida sunshine as only Hoffman (Seventh Heaven, 1990, etc.) could conjure it. Verity, Florida, once known for live alligators, is now better known for alligator salads (a mix of spinach, peppers, avocado and chopped eggs, tinted green), as well as for having more divorced women from New York than any other town in the state of Florida. Lucy Rosen is one of those women. She has recently moved to Verity, and what she doesn't know yet is that in May, when the turtles come out and crawl across the roads, anything can happen. People go crazy. Dogs bite. Ficus hedges burst into flame. This particular May, a woman in Lucy's condo complex is murdered, her baby is missing, and Lucy's own son, Keith, has vanished as well. With the assistance of Julian Cash, a reclusive Verity policeman, Lucy sets out to find out who committed the murder and what has become of the missing children. The fact that the ultimate resolution of these mysteries is only partly plausible doesn't really matter in the end. Because Hoffman's strength is that she deals in dreams. She knows all about the everyday things that defy simple explanations- -lovers who suddenly turn cold, turtles who mistake streetlights for the moon. The Florida she paints here is not the one promoted by any chamber of commerce. With a climate that is both mesmerizing and malignant, it is a place where dragonflies' wings catch fire and strangler plums drop down from trees, leaving dents in parked cars. It is a place where rattlesnakes crawl into telephone booths and angels lurk outside the Burger King. It's a place where anything might happen. And, naturally, it does. Pure Hoffman: her take on the tropics is haunting, hypnotic, and hot as a fever dream. (Book-of-the-Month Dual Selection for June) -- Copyright ©1992, Kirkus Associates, LP

I enjoyed this tale quite a bit. This was my second read of Hoffman, and I really like her fluid, rhythmic style. Her characters are so compelling they seem to take a tangible form, and her descriptive imagery so vivid it transports you. Wonderfully entertaining, and beautifully written.

This is the first book that I've read by Alice Hoffman and I have The River King waiting to be read very soon (Nell-Lu's bookring).

This was a highly compelling and entertaining read, I love the mystical elements that Hoffman puts into her stories and the atmosphere and characters were indeed tangible. I got wonderfully lost in this book and finished reading it today when I should have spent my time doing something far more constructive (i.e. chores), but I couldn't put it down!! ;0)

Thank you sarradee, for giving me the opportunity to read this, and thank you Maurean, for posting. Just about to pm Heaven-Ali for her address now, hopefully will get Turtle Moon in the post by the middle of the week.

Edited to amend error - I am quite clearly going mad - I know it's May but I don't live in Verity and we don't have turtles or gumbo-limbo trees here in Colchester (although I think, occasionally, we may have a bit of magic, especially when the moon is full ...).

I really loved this book. I have read several Alice Hoffman books, but this was my favourite to date. In other novels a mystical/magical element would probably irritate me, but in Alice Hoffman's beautiful books, it is not over done, it is subtle, and intriguing. The Florida heat crackles off the pages, you can almost smell the swamp, and see the turtles as they make their weary way to the sea. Hoffmans portrayl of a troubled young boy is brilliantly done.

I will pm RowanneM and send on soon.

This one arrived through my letter box today - I've read a couple of Alice Hoffman before so I'm looking forward to seeing if this one is as good!! I've just started another book, but this is next on my pile...

Sorry for the delay in finishing this one... have PM'd the next person in the ring for their address and will post it out next week to them! It was a fantastic book, as with all Alice Hoffman's that I've read, and never entirely what you're expecting from it when you start!!

Happy Reading!

Have had no end of problems with Bookcrossing recently... but I'm finally back! Have contacted the next person in line several times for their address with no response, so I'm moving on to the next person and will get the book out to them hopefully after this current postal strike is over!!
