Dans ce roman, légèrement autobiographique, il a plusieurs histoires. Gilbert Kazbeck, le narrateur qui les tresse d'une manière volontairement désordonnée, est un journaliste atypique du début des années nonante, myope à l'extrême, quelquefois vaniteux, quelquefois penaud. Aux ors et aux ténèbres du lac Léman, il mêle variablement les lumières, tout aussi colorées, du golfe Persique qui ont baigné son enfance.
