Spook: Science Tackles the Afterlife

10 journalers for this copy...
Just finished this book yesterday. I had previously read Stiff and really enjoyed it. Roach has a great accessible style for tackling these heavy topics and handles her subjects with both respect and humor. I do have to say I enjoyed Stiff a little bit more, but Spook was good fun too.

Happy travels little book!
Arrived here in my bookbox. This one looks very familiar to me, as I'm getting ready to read this in the upcoming week & am organizing a bookring for it! I think I may actually use this copy for the ring so that it can gain more readers. I'll make another entry when I'm done! Another great choice, jnpert!
I found this one to be on par with Roach's other two titles ("Stiff" and "Bonk"). I've enjoyed all three nearly equally, and while I don't typically read much non-fiction, I do enjoy Roach's humor for the most part. I would agree with the comment of another reader's review that I read which said this book might be more aptly titled something along the lines of "Spirit" or "Soul" or something similar, as opposed to "Spook", which leads the reader to believe there might be more ghost-story &/or spooky type anecdotes in the book, which is not the case. While most of the information in here was interesting, it seems that science continues to struggle to find evidential proof of a soul's existence.
Starting a bookring with this one! Please use common courtesy in participating in this ring, primarily meaning that you should journal when you receive the book & again when you send it on (along with your review), try to keep the book moving within a reasonable amount of time (1-2 months), & send me a PM if there's an issue or if you'd like to be rearranged in the mailing order. Otherwise, enjoy the book! :')

I missed the post office today, so this will be going out tomorrow to NMReader. Happy travels! :')
arrived safely - thank you
I love Mary Roach. She approaches her topics with humor and common sense and she doesn't mind trying things.
Her footnotes are wonderful.
While I did not enjoy this as much as I enjoyed Bonk or Stiff, it was still enjoyable.
I can't wait until her next book comes out

I will say that I liked it better than Bonk. Mary Roach is pretty funny, and I actually enjoy the footnotes sometimes more than the actual writing. But, like Bonk, it did have it's low points. I liked some chapters, and didn't seem to find an interest in the others.
My favorites were the one about reincarnation, the one about how the will was changed, and the last one was interesting, about the Near Death Experiences!
I'm sending it on to shpriz1 very soon!
thanks for letting me join!
Now, all I have to read is "Stiff," and I'll be caught up!

Thank you :)
Thank you :)
I have wanted to read this book for a while now, ever since I learned that it was published. Mary Roach is one of the writers that I am really looking forward to reading. However, my circumstances changed. My only sister passed away 5 months ago and I wasn't sure that the timing was right for me to read about life after death. In the beginning, the book did bring quite a few tears to my eyes. I was debating whether I should go on reading it. In the end, I decided to stick with it. I wasn't disappointed. As always, Mary Roach's style of writing made me laugh. Despite the fact that I didn't get the answers I've been looking for since my sister's death, I found some inner piece after reading this book. And I know for sure that just becasue of that this book will stay in my mind and my heart for a long while.
Big thank you to indygo88 for starting this bookring and to everyone else for keeping it going :)
I already have awakeagain's address and I will be mailing this book tomorrow.

Received this bookring today and should be ready to start reading tonight or tomorrow. PMing Stacers1973 for an address.
The book arrived safely today, thanks indygo88 for starting the ring, and awakeagain for passing it on to me. It is next up.
Spook, a good read --
The Chapter on reincarnation made me laugh at loud with this phrase: "We say 'P.P.' for short." Possibly they shouldn't. (In talking about the Previous Personality of a deceased person.)
I enjoyed Chapter 6: The Large Claims of the Medium ... I really enjoy if not totally buy the show "Medium" based around psychic Allison DuBois so that was interesting to me.
Most revolting chapter was the one including ectoplasm. Yuck, just yuck. I admit it, I skimmed.
So, did the book sway me? I already believe in ghosts/spirits CAN exist, and there was no proof here that they CAN'T. I always enjoy Mary Roach's approach and humor of the subject she is tackling. Her use of footnotes is informative and amusing, and I almost always want to skip ahead to read them before I have finished the page.
Will ship out this week back to indygo88, thanks again for sharing!

The book arrived back to me safely & promptly. Thanks, Stacers, for sending it back! And thanks to all who participated in the ring! :')
This one's going to continue its journey in my Best of BC(3) bookbox. Another familiar one for you, jnpert!
Caught this from the box. Thanks! I've been wanting to read this.
I really like this author, but maybe I shouldn't have read Stiff first. I don't think she will be able to top that one and it makes her other books seem lackluster. This one was my least favorite of the three. I'm not sure what I expected, but it just didn't grab me like her other books have.
I'm glad that I read it and I will still grab up any future books that she writes, but overall, I felt pretty "meh" about this one.
One part that I really did like was the footnote on cow curiosity. I really want to try that little experiment. :)
