It's a new month... time for some new bug fixes!
While Matt is still working on harnessing the book data that we all have contributed to, and making it available for searches, he's also been rather busy fixing other things, and even adding some nifty little features. Read all about it in this Announcements forum post.

I loved this book! I don't know why I picked it up at the Good Will. It is not a mystery book, but perhaps it was because I found it shortly after reading Of Mice and Men, and the cover kind of reminded me of that book. Although the erra seemed around the same time, and involved farm work, it had nothing else in common with Of Mice and Men.

A Day No Pigs Would Die is Robert Newton Peck's semi-autobiographical tale of a boy's struggle with adolescence and the responsibility of manhood. The details of Peck's boyhood coincide closely with those of the character bearing his name in A Day No Pigs Would Die. Peck was born on February 17, 1928, the youngest of seven children, in rural Vermont. Peck's parents, Haven Peck, and Lucile Dornburgh Peck, were farmers and members of the Shaker church. They were illiterate, but they taught Peck the Shaker Way, emphasizing the value of hard work, and the value of education. In 1958 he married Dorothy Anne Houston, by whom he would later have a son, Christopher, and a daughter, Anne. On a historical note, the best man at the wedding and godfather to the children was one of Peck's best friends, the late Fred Rogers, whose Mr. Roger's Neighborhood many children grew up with on PBS-TV.
(Interestingly, I would have never known that if I hadn't looked up to see if this was a biography or not. Google, love it!)

The novel about a boyhood on a Vermont farm, the love between a father and son, and a coming to manhood, that is themost moving book of the year...

"You'll find yourself caught up in the novel's emotion from the very opening scene which will grab and not let you go...love suffuses every page.
__The New York Times

"A lovely book... Honest, moving, homely, in the warm and simple sense of the word. It isn't trying to move mountains and it has no quarrel with life...
It's perfect!" - The Boston Globe

I don't think I want to just wild release this one. Although I might release it at the bus stop in Goerky Corner. But it is just so good, I want it to be taken by someone who really wants to read it. So if any of you are interested in this small book with a big story, then PM me and maybe I can start a book ring with it!

This bookring has been started. Here are the details:
7/21/05
A DAY NO PIGS WOULD DIE.
OK! I am ready to start the bookring! It took me a while to find the overseas places, but I think I have it. Here is the order of the bookring:

Jaffa-UK-Lincoln, Linconshire
Heaven Ali- UK- Burmingham, West Midland
Falmouth - Germany
Nefersand - Portugal
Tabby90 - USA-North carolina
Secretariat - USA- California
Back to me -USA-Nevada (by the time the bookring is over)

Two people are not on this list that signed up because they have not gotten back to me on my pm's to them. I'm sorry, but I wanted to get this started. Communication is important to me. The bookring is now closed. If I get requests from others to join, I will consider a second ring for it.

I did my best to meet everyone's shipping preferences. But with only two people in the UK Someone had to ship international. Thanks to both of you for being willing to ship if needed. I really appreciate that. Unfortunately you can not send it media mail because I pasted the directions in it, and I requested that you write on your postcards. But when I sent it priority, the postman gave me another alternative that was $3 less and got the book there in the same time. So the post should be able to help you find an inexpensive way to ship it. I didn't mention the cards, but apparently us customs will open the book and keep it if it is sent wrong. I am sending the first International because I want to help with the cost of overseas shipping. I can't wait to hear what you all have to say about the book! Here are the rules:
1. Journal when you have received the book
2. Read it within a month. (Remember it is a short book)
3. Try hard to post if there is a hold up on the book, things happen, just try to let us know.
4. PM the next person to get their address
5. Journal when you have finished and tell us what you think and when you are shipping it out.
6. Please send a post card with the book from your hometown. I heard about people doing this and I thought it was a great idea. I want to do a lot of traveling, so I thought this would make a good scrapbook page. Write on the post card what you thought of the book and what you like best about where you live. This is not a necessary step, but it would be fun. If you skip it, no biggie.
7. ship it out!
8.The end! :0)
I am adding this edit to remind you that because of the rules posted inside and the postcards, this can not be sent media mail when it comes back to the usa. If it is, there is a high chance they will stop the book from it's travels. Or at least that is what I have heard.
I will post these rules in the cover of the book to remind you and I will make a new thread for the bookring on the bookring forum.
I am mailing this out tomorrow if I can get Jaffa's address in time.
Happy reading!
