Tallinna vuonna 1422. Nuori Wibeke, kaupunginpyövelin tytär, pettyy rakkaudessa ja pakenee suruissaan kaupungin laidalle, jossa joutuu tahtomattaan todistamaan raakaa veritekoa. Pahoinpidelty nuorukainen jää yllättäen henkiin, vaikka muistinsa menettäneenä, ja vie nuoren neidon sydämen. Uusi rakkaus ei kuitenkaan johda onneen vaan murheeseen, ja kun apteekkari Melchior alkaa selvittää salaperäisen nuorenmiehen henkilöllisyyttä, hänellä on pian ratkottavanaan myös murhamysteeri. Uppoutuessaan tutkimuksiin Melchior huomaa olevansa taas askelen lähempänä oman sukunsa arvoituksen ratkaisua.
