I purchased this little book when I visited the author’s home in 2009. I have dipped in and out of it over the years. Time to register and let it go.

Thank you for bringing this to breakfast! I will have no problem fitting this into the suitcase. I have always wanted to read more than just a scattered Neruda poem here and there.

Received this book from Meganh at the Uncon in NZ and saved it for the 2024 666 Challenge. I am already behind on the challenge because I have been finishing my late Christmas gift projects. Figured it was a good time to read this so it could go to meet-up this weekend. I finished reading it in the middle of the night when I couldn't sleep and then struggled to post a comment or two on Goodreads on my phone in the dark while half asleep. I have copied and pasted them below for the amusement of anyone who cares to try to decipher them, as well as a couple (hopefully) more coherent comments.

See earlier comments as it is the middle of the night and I can't figure out how to cut and paste on my phone.

Retrieving the earlier comments was harder than I anticipated, but I got them

I was given this book for the 666 Challenge and it was quite small. Neruda is practically synonymous with Chilean culture. I found most of the poems to be dense although elevated by beautiful turns of phrase. I was able to comprehend and enjoy the last two poems, Girl Lithe and Tonight I Can Write. The illustrations by Picasso are quite appropriate for the sensual content and difficult cynical aspects of daily life.

I am not entirely clear as to what I meant by that last phrase in the middle of the night, but it rings true. I liked the imagery of blending the natural world and the personal aspects of the characters in the poem. But I think these poems don't speak to me as strongly as others might because they are too far removed from my own life experiences, so I only have the little clever phrases to latch onto. It might also help if I spoke Spanish.

Picked this up at the January 2024 BCinDC meetup. Next month at church, our poetry group's discussion theme is "Love Poems" because we're meeting on Valentine's Day. No one does love poems as well as Pablo Neruda, so I snagged this book immediately to read and choose from.

Journal Entry 7 by KateKintail at Burke, Virginia USA on Sunday, June 16, 2024
I read this in February of this year. I have read a number of Pablo Neruda's love poems, but most of the poems in this collection were new-to-me. I'm glad to have read them, even though some resonated with me more than others. I also like that the original appeared along with the translation of each poem.

Brought home from today's BC in DC gathering. I was curious both about the poetry (I've never read Neruda before) and analyzing the translation.
