Coming from slums, by the age of 11 Phiona was Uganda’s junior champion, at 15 the nation champion. With the constant threat of AIDS, kidnapping and starvation she dreams to become a chess grandmaster.

A true story from the Ugandan slum of Katwe.

I picked this book up while travelling the east coast of the South Island.

The story of Phiona’s life was fascinating, and I looked up where she is now (in 2022).

I would have preferred more about how Phiona adapted to her life opening up, the interaction with children she taught chess too who lived out of the slums, and far less on the religious agenda.
