The subtitle of this book is "The Misadventures of an Englishwoman in France". Because the author and her husband were experiencing serious financial difficulty in England, they bought an old farmhouse in the Poitou-Charentes region of France. For those of you, like me, who don't know where this is, this region lies in mid-eastern France with the western border on the Atlantic Ocean. The house has dirt floors, no water and a very primitive electricity supply. The main reason they wanted a house in the country was to provide a place for her old horses and numerous large dogs to live. Her description of life in this community often sounds like a nightmare to me. There is a long cast of eccentric characters running in and out of her life, and many problems with their primitive home. Yet enduring with the English stiff upper-lip and plenty of grace and kindness ultimately results in a pleasant place for Susie Kelly and her husband to call home.

WILD RELEASE NOTES:
I totally enjoyed this book, and found Kelly's (mis)adventures to be a fun read and a life I could have ~for the most part~enjoyed :) Though I hope I would have drawn the line much sooner with neighbors and workers who took tremendous advantage. But I have worked as a fire-watch, in a 1-room tower on a mountain, with no electricity or running water and a loo downhill awys which I occasionally shared with a rattler, and have been caretaker of a hobby ranch hand an hour down dirt from the nearest anything. the ranch did have electricity ~at least part of the day (when the generator was on) and running flushing water (except when the windmill pump broke down). LOL Also the most amazing night sky, horses and other four-leggeds to love, and, of course slitherers and other wild things..... yup, I could most definitely have enjoyed the rustic life in France~
So, I have PT at 4 today, and will be taking this with to leave in the waiting room.
