From paperbackswap.com:
Thirty-four years ago, Violet Sullivan put on her party finery and left for the annual Fourth of July fireworks display. She was never seen again. — In the small California town of Serena Station, tongues wagged. Some said she'd run off with a lover. Some said she was murdered by her husband. — But for the not-quite-seven-year-old daughter Daisy she left behind, Violet's absence has never been explained or forgotten.

Now, thirty-four years later, she wants the solace of closure.

In S Is for Silence, Kinsey Millhone's nineteenth excursion into the world of suspense and misadventure, S is for surprises as Sue Grafton takes a whole new approach to telling the tale. And S is for superb: Kinsey and Grafton at their best.

I picked this up at the convention in Tampere this year. I love Sue's books and have been trying to read them in order but I have got to about M and I think I just need to go for whatever I can find now. Happy to pick up a couple from the book buffet.

This was a really good one. I enjoyed the mystery so much - didn't figure that one out - and I liked her slight change on style too. I have had to skip a few letters in the series as I haven't come across them. But in this one it's not just a case of following Kinsey. There are also flashbacks from different characters perspectives at the time of the crime.

You can almost forget how old these books are until they start mentioning years and how old people are, and you notice the lack of technology. There are no mobile phones and Internet here, Kinsey has to do real detective work.

She is hired by Daisy, a 40 something mess up who wants to know what happened to her mother. Back in the 50s, young mother Violet seemingly just drove out of her daughters life and never looked back. Did she abandon her daughter, or is there skullduggery afoot? Seems like a lot of people in the little town had axes to grind.
