I've never read this particular collection of Carter's short stories, but I have read some of her other ones. One story that particularly stands out in my mind is her multi-versioned tale of Cinderella, which was disturbing, interesting, and beautiful (I love how she uses language) all at the same time. I don't think that story is included in this book, but my reaction to it gives you an idea as to how her stories work. In other words, these are not the fairytale-type of short stories that you want to read to your kids, but rather entertainment meant for the adults, especially those interested in the erotic macabre (which sounds a bit Anne Rice-ish, doesn't it?).

These are erotic? Woah. I just grabbed them based on the fact that it's Angela Carter. I've never read her short stories; this should be a great read.

Rescued from THE BOOKPLATE BOOKBOX because I always have to touch the Profane Pieces...

Hmmm... profane has many pieces and while these touch heavily on eroticism and rape/force/death, most of the sexing was with the language rather than the characters. I found most of the stories to be a lot of Pretty WTFs crossed with "What's the Points."

There were any number of times whilst reading this collection that I could have accidently left the book behind and not miss it a lick. I soldiered on, a tourist who'd gotten off at the wrong station, trying to make the best of things. Yes, yes, very skillful but I am long beyond being shocked at white hunters, beyond feeling sympathy for the exotic made overly familiar, and I was really hoping to just be entertained, thank you.
