I've not seen the movie and do not know what the whole story is about before I got this book. It's a very easy read and predictable. I told myself I'm not going to cry but the tears just fell when he realised he had fallen in love with her and told her so in the last third chapter.

"First you will smile, and then you will cry - don't say you haven't been warned." This came at the end of the prologue and I was sceptical when I came across it, but it is true in every sense as the author brings us into the lives of Landon Carter, rich congressman's son and Jamie Sullivan, minister's daughter who is so good that those who are not so good will feel bad about themselves and even feel jealous.

You smile as you realise how Jamie slowly brings forth the reluctant goodness and kindness in Landon and you cry when you realise that they only have such a short time together. Still it is a beautiful story.

I'm very excited about catching this book, not least because this particular copy has traveled the world! Thanks very much, herebedragons!

3/22: The good news is, it's a quick read. Otherwise, banal, saccharine, and irritatingly predictable. I've decided to pass on reading any more Nicholas Sparks books. Now I know why this book has traveled the world... people want to get it as far away as possible. Wonder whether there are any BookCrossers in Antarctica?
