This is my favorite book in the series. I think I like it best because it is the point at which Taran finds himself and is able to be who he is.

c. 1967 -- 272 pages -- Trade Paperback -- #4 in the Chronicle of Prydain series -- Reading Level: 6.6; Ages 10-14

Back Cover: Taran, Assistant Pig-Keeper, who wants to be a hero, goes questing for his parentage, in the hope that it will prove noble for the sake of Eilonwy, the princess with the red-gold hair. Accompanied by several loyal friends, Taran begins his search and is sent by 3 wily enchantresses of the Marshes of Morva to consult the Mirror of Llunet for the answers he is seeking, with the cryptic promise that "the finding takes no more than the looking." In his adventures he meets Craddoc, the shepherd, and the common folk of Prydain, for whom he has great admiration and respect. From them he learns life's hardest lesson -- to accept failure. Taran Wanderer, in a moving climax at the Mirror of Llunet, learns his own identity and the secret of the mirror.

Lloyd Alexander, a Philadelphian, blends the rich elements of Welsh legend and universal mythology in his 5-volume chronicle of Prydain, of which "Taran Wanderer" is the 4th. He is the winner of The Newbery Award for "The High King," the 5th and last book in the series.

I finished reading this book today. I'm giving it a higher rating than the others in the series because of the meaningful, thought-provoking concerns of Taran's quest to find his parents, where he ends up better understanding himself. It reminded me of the Girl Scout Brownie's song of looking in the mirror and seeing myself (coming to terms with who you truly are). However, I do look forward to reading the last book in the series in hopes of discovering who Taren's parents are ... in hopes that he has royal lineage for Princess Eilonwy.
