Based on a real life murder this is a very dark book. A woman is found having been tortured and then cut in half. It follows the investigation into the murder and the obsession of two policemen in particular. It is set against a backdrop of violence and corruption. The obsession takes it's toll on the two police men involved and those around them. Interesting ending.

I enjoyed this book but found it a bit hard to get into at first. The introductory chapter about Lee Blanchard and Bucky Bleinchert and their boxing career was not of much interest to me and I didn't really feel it helped to set the scene for the murder either. I can see how this work in a film format though. Overall stylish and a good read and I probably would read more of James Ellroys books.

Received today, thank you!

28.05.10 - oooohhh, shiny new BookCrossing website, I am a tad confused! I didn't like this book, one of the few books I felt worked better as a film, which was very good.

Posting off as soon as I have an address. Thanks for sharing.

09.06.10 - since the new website launched I've been having problems with sending and receiving PMs, admin are aware of this, and hopefully some magic pixies somewhere are able to solve the problems. I am still trying to get the next address to send this off, and will do so as soon as I can. Apologies for holding this book up.

A very dark book. I remember the movie haunting me for ages many years ago - I think the book will do the same.

A very violent and somewhat depressing read. I had watched the film of 'LA Confidential' but I don't think it prepared me very well for this film. Thanks again to Cat207 for sharing - I will get this one circulating soon.
