Gripping due its fast pace rather than any real sense of suspense, this is a fairly run-of-the-mill ghost story about two people, one long-dead and one no longer "living", who finally find the peace they are looking for.

Cover.

"It is March 1928. The Great War has been over for ten years, but Freddie still hasn't recovered from the loss of his brother. Even now, on holiday in south-west France, he cannot escape his grief.
When his car crashes, Freddie stumbles down from the hills to a village nearby. There he meets Marie, a beautiful young woman, who is also mourning a lost generation.
Her story of the fate of her family moves him deeply. But it will also lead him to the caves above the village - and to the heart of a shocking secret."

Well it lived up to its name. A quick read indeed! This short story is a small gem which is all too quickly finished. A great introduction to a new author for me. [On checking her out it appears that she is the co-founder and Honoury Director of the Orange Prize for Fiction, and was named European Woman of Achievement for her contribution to the arts. Quite a person after all.] I may well add some more of her books to my wishlist.

I have a plan for this little gem, a RABCK to someone special.

Thank you Flutterbies9 for these wishlist books. I love quick reads and I am looking forward to reading this one. It was a lovely surprise to open the package you sent to me, and to find not just this one but THREE wishlist books inside, and a beautiful postcard of Somerset. This was very generous of you.

I'm still snowed in here. I have turned up the heating, put some fluffy warm socks on my feet and I'm going to make myself a pot of tea and start reading this book.

Amazon Editorial Review:
A QUICK READ - part of the WORLD BOOK DAY 2009 literacy initiative for emergent readers. March 1928. Freddie Smith is on a motoring holiday in the mountains of south west France. He is caught in a violent storm and his car crashes. He is forced to seek shelter in a boarding house in the nearby village of Axat. There he meets another guest in the tiny hotel, a pale and beautiful young woman called Marie. As the storm rages outside, she explains how the region was ripped apart by wars of religion in the 14th century. She tells how, one terrible night in March 1328, all the inhabitants of Axat were forced to flee from the soldiers into the mountains. The villagers took refuge in a cave, but when the fighting was over, no one came back. Their bodies were never found. Axat itself became a ghost town. When Freddie wakes the following morning, Marie has gone. Worse still, his car will take several days to repair and he has to stay at the boarding house for a few days more. To pass the time, he explores the mountains. Then he realises it is almost 600 years to the day since the villagers disappeared. He decides to go and look for the cave himself. Perhaps, he thinks, he might even find Marie? It is a decision he will live to regret.

CONTROLLED RELEASE NOTES:

I am sending this book to my friend for her birthday.

Since her birthday is a day before Valentine's Day I have sent her a flimsy see-through tablecloth with red hearts especially for a romantic birthday meal or a Valentine's meal, a tiny red heart-shaped photo frame, some red heart stickers, a traditional Dutch birthday card, a red bookmark inside the book, and the cutest softest little grey mouse to chase away any rats from her property and to accompany her to her bookcrossing meetings and on her book-releasing trips!

I had to wrap poor mousey so that he was squashed flat, so that the envelope the goodies were in would fit through a letterbox, (otherwise postage rockets to double the price as there are no small packet rates here, and no surface mail). So I hope that he arrives safely, and once he is unwrapped I hope he fluffs and puffs up back into shape again and can still stand up on his own, as he could before his trip.

Mousey has two long white labels sticking out of him which you have permission to cut right off. They trip him up while he's running around. The photo frame did have a small dried red rose attached on the back of it by the stem, but I ripped that off because I don't think it's allowed to send flowers to Australia. So I took it off just to be sure. So if you see a small bit of glue on the back, that's where the rose was. You could glue a small magnetic strip there I suppose, and stick it on the fridge!

I hope this nice little book and the rest of the gifts arrive in time for your birthday. Have a great day Glenys!
