very readable, compelling fantasy set in Mexico. Saw the movie a long time ago, some of the scenes stuck in my mind, but had rather a sense of disconnection in the story line. NOW I see why! The film just skims the surface. Much more interesting in the book. Satisfying read.
Soon to be re-released.

This is a unique method of storytelling! In the middle of a critical event, the narrator reverts back to the current recipe, The cooking seems to be a source of stability during chaotic times. I enjoyed it very much but was surprised at the ending. I will be passing this on to Skylerdragon in Missouri as part of a trade.

WARNING: POSSIBLE SPOILERS

This magical tale strikes me as being very Latin in character. Emotions and passions are always at full tilt.

Much has been said about the role that the cooking plays in the story, which is often interrupted to continue with the current recipe. Earlier in this journal Nelle said "The cooking seems to be a source of stability during chaotic times." I'm not sure I quite agree with this.

My opinion is that Tita's emotions are constantly kept in check by the overbearing Mama Elena (even after Mama's death!). The way Tita expresses her emotions is through her cooking. That's how the magic happens. Tita's emotions are an added ingredient to the recipe she's working on at certain times (when her emotions are running so high - bubbling fiercely, like the water used in making chocolate). Whenever this magical combination occurs, the people who eat her food are affected by it; hence the nauseating Wedding party scene, for example!

I haven't yet seen the movie, but I believe Laura Esquivel also wrote the screenplay, so I'm guessing the movie was probably as captivating as the book. I didn't try any of the recipes, as they mostly seemed to be quite time-consuming, not to mention that I didn't want to expend the blood, sweat and tears that often appeared to be required!

This was one of the more unusual books I’ve read. I thought it interesting that terrible events were almost matter-of-factly interspersed with wonderful sensations and extreme passions. A sort of ‘recipe of life’ I suppose. And nothing in this story was done by halves - only the deepest pain, the highest joy, the best food! I read it in a few hours’ time, and am anxious to see the movie now. I was a bit disappointed by the ending, and the shifting time frames and reappearing characters were sometimes confusing. Overall, though, a great read!

This is headed for adah-price as of 10/18/04.
