There's a reason why this book usually ties for first place with the Bible when people are asked, "What book have you read that has most changed your life?"

I bought this copy from Half-Price Books specifically so I could release it... I think it's important that more people read this book, and understand the principles behind it. You don't have to agree 100% with Ayn Rand, but understanding who "the looters" are in our society may change the way you think.

Who is John Galt?

This book was waiting for me this evening when I came home after a depressingly long and dreary day at work. It instantly lifted my spirits that some total stranger was willing to share a book with me. Thanks VixyPixy!

Incidentally, this book turns out to be the exact edition of the one that my husband read as a teenager 20 years ago ... the book made a lasting impression on him and he has been telling me about it for years. I will report back after reading the book, thanks for giving me the opportunity.

To my shame I have to confess that this book has been sitting on the shelf for much too long.I do want to read it but I'm just not ready for Ayn Rand at this stage of my life ... I am sending this book to jenvince to fulfill one of her wishes. Maybe the book will return to me at a later stage when I am ready for it.

Thank you for this book and the nice postcard! I have to throw this on Mt. TBR for now, but hope to get to it soon. Will pass it on when I finish.

Unfortunately, I am not going to be able to get to this book anytime soon. Since I know it would rather be seeing than world than sitting in my bookcase, I am sending it to TracyShannon to read. :)

Wow! What a fabulous book! This is the first book from which I have ever voluntarily made notes. Thanks again jenvince!

I worry a lot about whether people who want to work for a living can reclaim the government from the looters! There seem to be too many moochers (who can vote to keep the looters) that think the government owes them a house and a check--and a piece of their neighbor's pie. Why should the neighbor have more than they? Who cares that he went to school and/or worked for his property! Okay, that's enough or I'll end up in a total rant!!!

Hmmm, still thinking about the best way to pass this book on...

P. 387 "So you think that money is the root of all evil? Have you ever asked what is the root of money? Money is a tool of exchange, which can't exist unless there are goods produced and men able to produce them. Money is the material shape of the principle that men who wish to deal with one another must deal by trade and give value for value. Money is not the tool of the moochers, who claim your product by tears, or of the looters, who take it from you by force. Money is made possible only by the men who produce. Is this what you consider evil?"

P. 389: "Run for your life from any man who tells you that money is evil. That sentence is the leper's bell of an approaching looter."

I received this on 7/2 from TracyShannon in Germany ... as a RABCK. I'm sorry I didn't journal until now but we've been on vacation.

c. 1957 -- 1084 pages -- Paperback -- #1 on Modern Library Reader's 100 Best Novels list -- #37 on The 100 Favorite Novels of Librarians list -- #92 on Radcliffe Publishing 100 Best Novels list -- on my nephew's Top 20 Favorites list

Back Cover: The astounding story of a man who said that he would stop the motor of the world -- and did. Tremendous in scope, breathtaking in its suspense, "Atlas Shrugged" is unlike any other book you have ever read. It is a mystery story, not about the murder of a man's body, but about the murder -- and rebirth -- of man's spirit.

I finished reading this today. This is one of those books that has the very first line grab your attention and carry it all throughout the book ...

Who is John Galt?

I enjoyed Part One better than the other two parts. It was interesting to follow Dagny's quest to find the inventor of the motor they discovered. I agree with the other readers that a lot of profound meaning was put into the book. But I can't help but think it could have been said in less than 1000 pages ... then maybe more people would read it. Some of the lectures were long and drawn-out ... to the point of boring. I came close to rating it with a 9 except for how long it was.

I've tried and tried to get into this book but I think, like another journaller, it just isn't in the cards for me right now.

Thank you for sharing the book with me, I really did want to read it but just can't get my arms around it with a young toddler in the house. I will make this available to share again so it will move on its way...
