The cult status of "Crash" has intensified since its original publication in 1973, making it a classic of underground literature. In this hallucinatory novel, the car provides the hellish tableau in which Vaughan, a 'TV scientist', experiments with erotic atrocities among crash victims, each more sinister than the last: ultimately, he craves a union of blood, semen and engine coolant in a head-on collision with Elizabeth Taylor.

Arrived this morning. Looking forward to reading it, something different to my normal taste in reading.

Journal Entry 4 by bookowl1000 from Wuhan, Hubei China on Thursday, October 22, 2009
I can understand why this novel was so controversial when published in 1973. Today, as a results of more explicit tv/cinema and the internet which has brought to light many fetishes, it is not shocking to ‘find out’ there are people who achieve sexual excitement from violence. The sexually explicit terms/descriptions and allusions to car crashes are full on throughout the novel, and to be honest I found it a bit tedious towards the end. The characters were not likeable, and I could not identify with them (thank goodness). I also find it difficult to believe that so many people with the same unusual interest could find each other so easily pre-internet.

I am intrigued as to how David Cronenberg made this book into a film.

Journal Entry 8 by mrbaggins1 from Johannesburg, Gauteng South Africa on Thursday, December 10, 2009
Ho-hum. I saw the move years ago and it was quite weird. Maybe the novel dated with time and I found the plot line repetitious. Crash....scars....semen...sex...driving or whatever and then back to a crash again. Chuck Palahniuk and even Brett Easton Ellis is much better in this genre and "Crash" really became quite boring in the end. One of those novels that I read because it is regarded as a cult classic, but it just ran out of steam about half way through.

Thanks for sharing - sending it on to the next down the line

I was very happy when I found this book together with another ring/ray send from South Africa in my mailbox today. I guess they both took the slow boat around the world :). The book goes on MTBR for now.

May 2010:
A bit too much about sex and crashes for my taste. It could be influenced by the fact that I read "story of the eye" before this book which also contains a lot of sex scenes. In that book it didn't bother me at all. But while reading this book I got the feeling that the writer just didn't know where the story was leading to either.

Book has arrived safe and sound, will add it to the pile and get to it as soon as I can.

9 June 10 - Not my sort of book, I don't think of my self as a prude but just can not imagine how people are turned on by car crashes, takes all sorts I suppose! Can see why it was controversial when it was released and good point someone made about the internet, it did seem very odd that all these people with the same fetish were in the same place. I have Caroleys address so will pop it in the post later today.

Ok, that was different. I quite liked it, despite or maybe because of, the bizarre subject matter. I liked the imagery in it as much as anything.

Thanks for sharing bookowl1000. I already have the next participants address so will send the book on straight away.

I actually found this book quite disturbing and although I don't consider myself prudish some parts really made me cringe. It also made me very uncomfortable when I started reading it on the bus, lol.

I will send this on the earthcaroleanne as soon as I can xx

Journal Entry 21 by wingearthcaroleannewing at Falkirk, Scotland United Kingdom on Monday, August 23, 2010
I had seem the film many years ago so knew what to expect in terms of sex and violence but the book didn't do anything me at all. In fact by Chapter 3 I wondered if I even wanted to read it, however having nothing else for my train journey I carried on. When I reached the office I logged on and read the previous journal entries which is something I never do before finishing the book myself. Fate obviously made the choice for me as I accidently left the book in the office by mistake over the weekend. I have now skimmed through it, occassionally jumping paragraphs. It was boring more than anything and a huge disappointment.

Sorry I've had this book for so long.
I've had it for four weeks, and only got half way through it! So I decided to just give up and send it on. I wouldn't say I hated it, but I was kind of disappointed.

Anyway, it'll be sent on to the next reader on Monday.

Arrived today - Having read 'Empire of the Sun' I'm interested to see what this one will be like given the previous reviews!

Journal Entry 26 by wingbrunton11wing at Salford, Greater Manchester United Kingdom on Tuesday, October 12, 2010
I liked this one more than I thought I would given the previous reviews. It was pretty graphic and I agree with Danielle23 that it might not have been good choice for reading on the bus and the train! Most disturbing for me was the fact that the main character was called James Ballard...

I've PM'd allthesepieces and will get this book in the post to them once I have an address. Thanks bookowl1000 for sharing this book.

It's been a little while since I've had a bookring or bookray, so when I noticed this in yesterday's mail, I was really excited to begin reading it. I'm about a third of the way through. I'll try to finish it either tonight or tomorrow, post my review, and then figure out where it'll go next.
