I haven't started to read yet, but receiving this book from another bookcrosser just tickles me silly! I will post my comments after I complete the book and when I release it into the wild. Thanks BJ!
This was the 1st book I've read by Cisneros and it will not be my last. I can't wait to read her poetry.
The story is told in short vignettes from the point of view of young Latino girl living in a Chicago slum and how she is coming to reconcile her dreams (embedded in one day owning a home that is big enough) against the visual reality of her community.
I will release it soon...maybe in the break room at my work place. Maybe at Nancy's Bagel and Grounds...I"m not sure yet...its such a great book!

I received this book from a fellow bookcrosser and dear friend. Before her recommendation I had never heard of Cisneros..but you can be sure everyone I know soon will!
I was unprepared for how the seemingly simple prose was packed with such imagery that it evoked emotion without spilling into the sloppy sentimental. I felt incredibly intimate with the landscape Cisneros created so eloquently. It was temporary residence granted to Mango Street, a visa to lives not often explored or talked about. This was a glimpse into the hearts, dreams and sorrows of a Latino community made more profound by the author's clear voice and even clearer eyes. I plan to read it again before releasing it as it's short enough to read in a day. I loved this book.
