This book comes from a different perspective than other thrillers I've read - ie what happens after 'the incident'. It was probably made more disturbing to think someone could go through all that and then find some so-called expert decides it's all in the mind and you are left with little or no support.

The first chapter is very well written and very scary, I then wasn't sure where the story was going but warmed up again to it and read most in one day (commuting time).

Enjoy - I did!

I enjoyed this book, I like the style of Nicci French books and would recommend to others, thanks for sharing.

***Spoiler*****

I especially like the strong female characters, that don't lay down and just accept the situation they are in. In the three I have read the main character seems to fight back and usually in an unexpected way. eg, Abbie and the eye gouging!

Two things bugged me though - if you are having a hair cut and dye job, no hairdresser will dye really long hair before cutting it!

Cat food bowls do not go next to litter trays as cats hate their food and toilet in the same room, let alone next to each other.

Its little details that bug me sometimes and I kept returning to them which made this a 7 rather than 8.

This is a pretty scary story, thrilling too. I felt that the ramblings of Abbie during her incarceration went on a little too long and I was desperate for something to happen. Thats why I've rated it 7. The twists and turns as she tries to rediscover her lost memory are fascinating, and ooh dear the ending... yuck! All in all a good read though and I would recommend it. Thanks lulubookish for organising it.

Passing to Patchworkperson as soon as I have the address.

A good thriller that kept me reading until the wee small hours. I liked the what happens to the victim after the event scenario. I can't imagine what it would be like to go through what she did & to have no-one believe or even miss you. And what an icky ending!

Update - 25/06/06 On it's way to isisjem in the morning.

Journal Entry 11 by isisjem from Oxford, Oxfordshire United Kingdom on Wednesday, June 28, 2006
Received in this mornings post from Patchwork Person. This is next to read.

Really looking forward to reading this as I've not read any Nicci French before - only seen some of the book dramatisations on TV.

I have a confession to make. I received this in yesterdays post. Got in from work at about 1.30pm and thought I'd just read a few pages. A few cups of tea and a ready meal (so I wouldn't be distracted from the book for too long!)later I'd finished. So be warned once you pick this up you might not be able to put it down.

I read a lot of thrillers - most of which are American. It was nice to have something set on home turf.

This is my first Nicci French Novel and now I want to read more!

*****Potential Spoiler**********

It was interesting reading other peoples comments. I was sort of expecting to be more irritated by inconsistencies; as these bug me too!

It does seem weird that they'd colour long hair and then chop it all off. But thinking about it the one time I had my hair coloured they coloured it first and cut it after and I have long hair.

Oh and when I've looked after my neighbours four cats; when they've been away, they leave the litter tray right next to the cat flap which is right next to the food bowls and their cats don't seem to mind so it obviously depends on your own experience.

Either way I don't think they'd have spoiled my enjoyment of the book in the slightest.

What I did find incredible - and I don't want to say too much even though I've said "Spoiler" - is that Abbie could go through all that and so soon after put herself in some of the situations that she did. I know she was desperate to make people believe her story but even so...

I thought the fact that people didn't believe her was credible and it was creepy how Dr Beddoes was so nice to Abbie and then twisted things around to not believe her in the case meeting. Not being believed and knowing that "he" is still out there is a terrifying thought.

Detective Cross irritated me. I hope policemen aren't really like him!

Enjoy!

A great, escapist read, I did feel Abbie's 'ramblings' went on a bit too long though and I wanted to get to the next part of the story. Will pm lulubookish for an address.
