This book ranks in my top ten books ever read. Banks' culture novels are without exception terrific, but this is by far my favourite. It is gripping, sweeping, funny, shocking, yet contains a sort of wistful melancholy that makes your heart go out to the extremely disfunctional family at the heart of the novel. Wonderful!
