This book usually gets great reviews.

I have NO idea why.

The "philosophy" it espouses is nonsense. It is poorly written--basically a dialog between the main character and a series of people he meets who explain The Manuscript to him. The Manuscript is basically a guide to the secrets of life. Or something like that. I couldn't force myself to read far enough into the book to figure it out.

The action takes place in Peru. I can only imagine that the author assumed that most readers have not been to Peru so the description of the country wasn't important. Let me tell you that his Peru doesn't come close to reality. Unfortunately I have lived in Peru and believe me you cannot just drive straight over the Andes, as he has a couple of characters do in the beginning of the book.

But, most importantly, the writing is stilted, the vocabulary is limited and the sentences are laughable. One example: "He was murdered. We don't know by whom. His body was found in the forest miles from his house. But I have to think it was his enemies."

I gave the book one star only because I couldn't figure out how to give it zero stars. Blech. Unfortunately I am sending it to someone who has requested it and I'm afraid they'll be terribly dissappointed when they start to read this nonsense. Then again, I'm usually wrong.

I have been reading this in bits and pieces since I got it. I am not overly impressed.

I'm taking this to the August meetup.
