I can see how he's killing them.

In a world where the dead can testify against the living, someone is getting away with murder. Because to every generation are born a select few souls with violet-colored eyes, and the ability to channel the dead. Both rare and precious - and rigidly controlled by a society that craves their services - these Violets perform a number of different duties. The most fortunate increase the world's cultural heritage by channeling the still-creative spirits of famous dead artists and musicians. The least fortunate aid the police and the law courts, catching criminals by interviewing the deceased victims of violent crime.

But now the Violets themselves have become the target of a brutal serial murderer - a murderer who had learned how to mask his or her identity even from the victims. Can the FBI, aided by a Violet so scared of death that she is afraid to live, uncover the criminal in time? Or must more of her race be dispatched to the realm that has haunted them all since childhood?

Someone is turning a blind eye to murder.

I absolutely loved this book. It was a fantastic read and I am anxious to start the sequel.

This book was full of suspense, the paranormal, a touch of romance.

Good story! I don't want to give too much of the plot away beyond the description above, so I'll just say that this is a fast and easy read which I definitely recommend to anyone who likes thrillers or stories about the paranormal. Stephen Woodworth writes very well, and I especially love the way he describes things. Umbrellas don't just open, they mushroom. A woman has lovely soymilk skin. Woodworth paints quick, interesting pictures that enhance the narrative without bogging it down.

I'm surprised more people weren't interested in seeing the Violets disappear -- just about anyone with a secret to keep might see Violets as potentially problematic. There are at least two more books to follow this one however, so maybe that will come up more later....

This is now an international bookring! The ring will remain open until it's on it's way back to me, although late entries need to ship internationally. I'm not setting a hard and fast time limit for each person, but please remember there are others waiting on the book after you and that most people expect a ring to stay with each person around a month or so. I'm reserving the right to change the order of the participants around just in case...

Participants:

1. TwiggySC1973 (US)
2. firrantello (US)
3. Gutterbunny (US)
4. midwinter (US)
5. Heaven150 (Can)
6. amberC (Aus)
7. sally906 (Aus)
8. lauraloo29 (Can)
9. Scrawler (US/Poland)
10. Back to me!
And we're finished! The ring has made it all the way around!

Wow what a great book and great story. I cannot wait to see where he takes us next. I was a little disappointed in the ending but that's all I'll say.

Journal Entry 12 by firrantello on Monday, August 1, 2005
Got here in the mail today. I knew it was coming and yet it still surprised me :)
I'll start it later today or tomorrow and get it out shortly. Thanks!

Journal Entry 13 by firrantello on Tuesday, August 2, 2005
First thing that I thought on reading the summary for the book was the movie Minority Report. I think maybe because of the justice system's use of the Violets.
Anyway, this was a hard book to put down. Interesting the whole way through. I really enjoyed it.

Talked to midwinter and Kyrissaean and both said they were cool if the book made a second stop at my house to my mom (gutterbunny). She's probably halfway done already. I'll get her to journal it then we'll send it on to midwinter.

Journal Entry 14 by Gutterbunny from Morganton, North Carolina USA on Friday, August 5, 2005
I don't usually get so caught up in books that I can't put them down but this was one I couldn't wait to get back to each time I had to stop. The story was well paced and kept interest high.

Journal Entry 17 by midwinter from Tucson, Arizona USA on Monday, August 29, 2005
This was an extremely quick read, and although I didn't enjoy it as much as everyone else, I'm still glad I read it. The writing style was a bit weak for me - I felt like I could beat the author to the punch at every turn. The only bit that really surprised me (no spoilers) was Dan's confrontation with the bad guy in the end. Never saw *that* coming :)
It'll be in the mail to the next in line as soon as I receive an address.

Journal Entry 18 by Heaven150 from Edmonton, Alberta Canada on Monday, September 12, 2005

Passed to me by AmberC at our monthly meet-up. Have just finished a book - so this is up next.

Journal Entry 24 by sally906 from Toowoomba, Queensland Australia on Sunday, October 16, 2005
Wow - I loved this. Only got it yesterday - but spent all day today reading it - thank goodness for Sunday's :)

What a really different concept, is his first novel - bit of a sad ending romance wise - but a satisfactory ending as far as clearing up the crime.

I have put my name down for the sequel 'with red hands' being organised by TwiggySC1973 - can't wait for it.

I have lauraloo29's snail mail - and will get it off later this week.

Arrived today. I have an embarrassing number of bookrings in my possession at the moment. Not to worry. I've been getting through them quickly. :) I'll keep the book moving.

Update - Dec 4th - Starting the book. Shouldn't take more more than a couple of days and I already have the next person's address. :)

Journal Entry 27 by winglauraloo29wing from Edmonton, Alberta Canada on Tuesday, December 6, 2005
Finished today. It held my attention. I found the premise interesting. I didn't find the ending satisfying though. I will be sending to the next person on Friday. Looking forward to reading the sequel. Thank you for sharing!

Journal Entry 28 by Scrawler on Sunday, January 8, 2006
Never fear! The book arrived sometime over Christmas break and was waiting for me in me mailbox when I got back. I will start it as soon as I finish my current book!

Journal Entry 29 by Kyrissaean from Littleton, New Hampshire USA on Tuesday, August 8, 2006
WooHoo! This is the first ring I've hosted that has made it all the way around and back home!!! Thanks to all the participants!!

What perfect timing too - I have a friend here locally who's looking for a big stack of books to see her through her recovery from shoulder surgery next week, and I think she'll really like this series. :)
