Per the Foreword at the beginning of this book, it was the the third most popular book at the turn of the 20th century, coming after Uncle Tom's Cabin and Ben Hur. Millions of copies were printed and it was translated into over twenty languages. Also it rated second on the list of the twenty-five most influential books published after 1885.
