Lucrezia, fifth daughter of the Grand Duke of Tuscany, is different - born with a wild spirit, an artist. At a young age she is betrothed to Duke Alfonso of Ferrara, a man who understands her love of animals. But right from the beginning another timeline sees Lucrezia taken to a remote fortress by Alfonso, and the reader knows that within a year of marriage she is found dead, rumoured to have been murdered. This is beautifully told and incredibly suspenseful. O'Farrell is a brilliant writer.
