Burble: The second Vera Stanhope Novel

They thought she was a murderer. But now she's a victim...

Ten years ago fifteen-year-old Abigail Mantel was murdered, her cold body discovered lying in a ditch. Her father's girlfriend was found guilty of the crime. Now, evidence has emerged that proves her innocence and means that Abigail's killer still roams free.

Abigail's best friend at the time of the murder has now returned to the East Yorkshire village of Elvet to raise her young family. Shocked by the new revelations, she begins to realize that she didn't know her friend as well as she thought...

Detective Inspector Vera Stanhope is tasked with uncovering the truth and, as her new inquiries stoke up past secrets the villagers will lie to protect, she must find out which lies will bring her to the killer.

The residents of an East Yorkshire village are revisited with the nightmare of a murder that happened 10 years before. Doubt about the guilty verdict passed on Jeanie Long originally has come back to roost in the community as it appears Jeanie was innocent all along. The killer then is still at large. Inspector Vera Stanhope builds up a picture of a community afraid of itself and of outsiders.

The type of plot unravelling Cleeves excels at, a seemingly plodding pace while, Vera casts few wee glimpses and hints toward the demount we eventually reach. When we discover that, as ever things were not how they seemed at all. Generally not really much in the way of happy endings in Cleeves crime dramas. Much like true life I suspect when murder is involved. Instead, there is certainly a pleasing balance regained as the perpetrator is manipulated into revealing their guilt. The stage is cleared for life to continue... Gosh, that sounds all very somber but yet Vera is a down to earth character whose idiosyncratic behaviours add levity and compassion to the mix most appealingly.

Marking as reserved as I have another reader (F9) in mind for this.
