Hardly ideal starting with book four in series but it's the only one I have. Alerted to Fields at Bloody Scotland — annual Scottish Crime Writers Book Festival, Stirling — I was aware of her name and the praise she garnered and I thought I was picking up the first in series. However, the first six books in this series begin with 'Perfect'. Hey ho, if I will pick up books on a whim, in a rush this kind of thing can happen...

Book burble:
Is all ends with the final stitch...
When silence falls, who will hear their cries?

The body of a young girl is found dumped by the roadside near Edinburgh and pathologists make a gruesome discovery: the outline of a doll carved into the victim’s skin.

DCI Ava Turner and DI Luc Callanach are struggling to find leads in the case, until a doll made of skin is found beside an abandoned baby.

After another young woman is found butchered, Luc and Ava realise the babydoll killer is playing a horrifying game. And it’s only a matter of time before he strikes again. Can they stop another victim from being silenced forever – or is it already too late?

The #1 bestseller returns with a standout thriller that will have you on the edge of your seat. Perfect for fans of Karin Slaughter and M. J. Arlidge.

A curious combination of; police procedural sparked with gore and, psychological drama all tubmled together with a flick of romantic comedy. Plus, to my suprise, a whole load more clichés than I expected. I was wondering how DCI Ava Turner and DI Luc Callanach's relationship had faired from the beginning (NB mentioned previously, I've started on book 4) and where it is bound?

A cleverly achieved balance means there's a distanced remove from the trauma described. One that easily wrestles this from a stark labelling of horror in my mind. All this shows I expect why Fields novels are popular.

Not popping the series on my wishlist at present I'm as currently chasing up a myriad of other book series. Who do I know who may appreciate this next?

[Release notes...]
Picked this up to prep it for releasing and recall that mid/way through the book I couldn't see myself picking up others in series. However, my notes and reflection remind me I enjoyed both investigations which intertwined cleverly and in so doing ratcheted up the tension so cunningly. Also I realise I'd appreciated the lightness of touch that balances the distressing weight of grim gore.

OK, I'll admit, I was surprised I'd started to get caught up in Ava and Luc's relationship so much by completion. Luc's intamacy challenges and the dicotemy between Ava's sure command at work as opposed to her unsettled personal lifestyle provided issues I expect had been intended as overarching background. Now in hindsight cannot help but wonder what's next for Ava and Luc?

Ha, hooked despite myself!

Plans changed for a next reader now, off to Livingston.
