Their Eyes Were Watching God: A Novel

One of my top 10. A sad and humourous story of one woman who lives on her own terms while meeting the requirements of the culture she lives in. True to her duty, but truer to her heart.
Off to DoveiLibri!
Rec'd in the mail as a RABCK. (Thank you!) Will return to add a journal entry when I have read it, but it might be a while. Thanks to Book Crossing, my "To Be Read" pile is pretty much a "To Be Read" MOUNTAIN!

July 10, 04: Started to read it tonight, but as much as I am LOVING the story and characterizations, I am getting very slowed down by the dialect. Will have to concentrate hard so that the dialect doesn't DETRACT from the story.
I actually think I may have started this book YEARS ago, in college, and then returned it to the library for the same reason, but I really want to know what happens to all the characters, so I will stick it out this time!
Edited for NOTORIOUS spelling!

July 19, 2004: I have finished the book! As I suspected, I LOVED the story, the characters, their personalities . . . but the very drawn out and phonetically spelled out dialect really made me have to concentrate to get meaning. But I did, and it was worth it.
Now available to any book crosser who promises to pass it along when they are done. I am going to search wish lists, and if that doesn't prove fruitful, I'll offer it on the Wish Lists Forum or the Book Ring Forum.

This was so good. The language, while difficult to follow at first, is so well written it just comes alive. What a great character.
