Excellent book! This was a little Stephen King-ish to me, a little macabre. Very nicely written. I couldn't wait to see what the ending would hold for Misty Marie. I'm going to put this out on a BookRay.

Journal Entry 15 by PaigeTurner124 on Thursday, November 18, 2004
This book was unlike any I've read before. I found it fascinating. I agree with the other journals, it was a little Steven King-ish, and confusing at times, but pretty much came together in the end. It was a quick read. Thanks for the bookring! I'll send it on to the next person as soon as they reply with their address.

Just an update. I *am* still reading this, I've just been busy with school and work the last two weeks. It took me 2-3 attempts to get into it, perhaps because I couldn't devote a solid couple of hours at a time..but its well on its way now. Will update when its finished.
Thanks.

PM'd Lpree for mailing info.

update: July 7, 2005
This was a very odd story - very different from the other novels by this author I've read. It took me quite a while to get into it, it seemed to jump all over the place...but in the end, it was worth persevering for.

I apologize for holding up the ray. I had moved and thought I had mailed this months ago, however, I found it today in a box of BC-ing supplies - all packaged and ready to go....but not gone!!! So I mailed it tonight.

This arrived yesterday at my mother's house and she gave it to me this morning. I really enjoyed the other book of Palahniuk's that I read ("Lullaby") so I'm looking forward to reading it! I've got a few other bookrings ahead of it but will read it as soon as I can.

Journal Entry 21 by Lpree from Omaha, Nebraska USA on Tuesday, August 2, 2005
Another great story by Palahniuk. I've only read one other novel by him, but he's got a very distinct style of writing. Lots of repetition, but it really adds to the crazy feeling of the book. This was certainly an interesting story and I really enjoyed it.

Thanks very much to tuff517 for starting this ring. I will get this mailed out to the next person in line as soon as I can!

UPDATE - mailed 8/6

I'm beginning to know what to expect from a Palahniuk novel* - you start off understanding what's going on (or at least, you think you do), and the book seems like it's going to be pretty unimpressive. Then about half way through the realisation slowly dawns that things are not quite as they seem, and the story suddenly becomes much more gripping as you try to figure out what's really going on. And then at the end, just when you think you've got it all figured out, and you're totally tied up in the story, he turns it all on its head yet again, and you come out the other side gasping at the sheer inventiveness of it all. Add to that his clever use of the rhythms of language to build a mood (or should that be a feeling of insanity?), and you've quite an amazing book.

One thing though still confused me at the end of this book (spoiler follows - highlight to read): How did Misty get out of jail? She seemed to be totally implicated in Angel's murder, and then suddenly she's walking free. Maybe we're supposed to assume that all that money they'd suddenly inherited paid for a really good lawyer or something, but it was a jarring note in an otherwise satisfying conclusion.

*which is not to say his writing is formulaic - it's anything but. You may approach his books knowing to expect the unexpected, but the unexpected won't turn out to be what you expected it to be ;-)

... just for the record, the weather today is calm and sunny, but the air is full of bullshit...

there were some parts i really liked but i was a little disappointed by the overall narrative. other palahniuk novels grapped me a lot more.

this book is now on its way to muvrino. thank you futurecat for sending the book my way and tuff517 for starting this ray.
