In the Virginia hunt country, Jed Baily is on trial for the murder of his wife. His motive: he is in love with Sue Poore and wants to be free to marry her. Jed is acquitted, but the police and district attorney immediately begin to build a case against Sue instead. Very old-fashioned, and Sue is definitely a damsel-in-distress type, but the book was written in 1950 when a Southern belle very likely did need a "gentleman" to save her. Nice descriptions of the hunt country in Virginia.
