A young wife travels to New York from London, after visiting her father-in-law and being urged by him to reconcile with her husband. He has strict instructions for her: she is to stay in the New York penthouse apartment of a relative, and she is to have full control of the family money. Almost as soon as she arrives at the penthouse, she learns that her father-in-law has died, but that someone is on the way who will stay with her and help her. Mysterious things start happening, and she begins to be afraid that someone is trying to kill her. Very old-fashioned and atmospheric. The descriptions of the NYC penthouse in 1950 are wonderful. Not many people live like that - then or now.
