Satirical but certainly not very far from the star's way of life. I can understand how anybody can be so interested in the magazines. They seem ugly to me.

I haven't read anything by this author in a while, but appreciate the opportunity to reconnect. This has arrived safely in the Swiss alps - I have another ring or so here before I can tackle it, but hope to get to it soon. Thanks for making it available, and thanks for sending.
I read the story with Chemo (was it Skinny Dip??) eons ago, so it was interesting to encounter him again. Hiaasen blurs the lines between the good guys and the bad guys, but he tells a funny tale.
I've written to confirm that kiki66 still wants to be in on this. I'll be travelling to France in about two weeks, and as the postal rates for books are much lower than from here, I'll take this and send it from there. I hope that's ok. Thanks for much for making this available.

So I have finally finished this book. I must admit that I read another book in between because I wasn't sure whether I am going to finish it at all.
The style, the tone wasn't my cup of tea. He described the life of the VIPs absolutely accurate, but sometimes a bit too vulgar or even too gross. And I didn't find it funny! I wasn't even grinning!!
I simply continued reading because I thought (hoped??) that at the end there would be a real surprise effect - but alas! my hope was in vain..
I don't think I will read any other book by this author :-(

I got this in the mail a few days ago -- sorry! I have read his book, "Basket Case", which also takes place in Florida. I guess that's a given.
It isn't my usual preference for genre, subject, or plot line. Not really even the writing style. Still, it was enjoyable to read about places that are known to me, and it served its purpose as a quick read enough that I'm willing to try another.

I read, & enjoyed, quite a few of Hiaasen's books almost 20 years ago. Either "Star Island" isn't nearly as good or my tastes have changed in that time, because I just didn't enjoy this one at all - the 'humour' left me cold & I couldn't find a character to like. I hope it's the former as I have a few on my shelves I've yet to read. I suspect it's a combination of the two, however, as I know my reading tastes have changed some over the years.

Finished fairly quickly because I was sick and had time to read ;-) It was my second Carl Hiaasen and I enjoyed his comical style again. What a life these so called "VIPs" live...
