Casting a steely ‘rationalising’ eye over some book piles prior to scooting out and I’ve found this. Books I feel I ‘ought-to-read’ rather than books I am ‘desperate-to-read-right-now’ are a staple of my book piles, well as much as I am sure they are a staple of others collections. Anyhow, this one of the former got ferreted out for instant release.
The Long Afternoon sounded such a considered and gentle reflection on a period prior to the First World War, which acutely affected an English family living in France. But yet, I skimmed and scanned this and finding it pretty solemn I just didn’t give it a chance so off it goes travelling. Hope the next reader finds it interesting.

Fron Fantastic Fiction: The Williamson's arrive on the French Riviera, find a home and start building a life of comfort though a shadow lies across their domestic utopia, not only in Henry's health but the European conflict. As the story unfolds, the marriage seems freighted with the seeds of its own destruction.
