I first saw this book and author on the Oprah show about 12 years ago. This was one of the first books I started to read for my own self-therapy to pull out of a deep major depression. The author also wrote The Cinderella Complex.

The book describes the author's personal experience with her own family and depression. She writes in a clear, heartfelt way that is easy to understand and tugs at your heartstrings. She gets to the meat of the problems of depression and gives sound medical emotional assistance to the reader.

This book was written in 1991, so there are newer medical treatments today, but she packs a lot of information into this book, including forewords by two doctors.

I recommend this book along with newer books for anyone suffering depression or who has a family member with the affliction. It's devastating. I was able to pull out of it after a number of years on both therapy and medication. The self-help books I read on depression (and abuse) were instrumental in my recovery.
