Having read "Trespass" I was hoping that "The Road Home" would be equally as enjoyable. "Trespass" is a great psychological thriller and one of my fav books.
"The Road Home" however follows the life of an Eastern European character called Lev, who decides to seek his fortunes in London, UK. He befriends a fellow Eastern European character called Lydia, who loves Elgar and orchestrations of such masterpieces.
The story is quite slow to begin with and we almost feel a degree of pity for Lev (the central character), as he becomes known as he spends his only £20 note on a B&B, becomes known "poster delivery man" at 2p per successfully posted poster, and sleeps rough. Lev is recently widowed, leaving behind his daughter (Maya) in the loving hands of his own mother and his best friend (Rudi).
His fate is turned around when he contacts Lydia again, after they go their separate ways in London town. He then lives with a social pariah and outcast called Christy. A former plumber, who suffers from alcoholism and has let his own home go to wreck and ruin. Letting out his rooms to random strangers seeking their Dick Whittington moments in the Big Smoke. Christy also loses touch with his wife and daughter. Lev in turn takes on the room and bunk bed where Christy's young daughter lived once.
Lev's fate turns around when he becomes a "nurse" (jack of all trades) in a kitchen of a Top London Chef. Through his strength, determination, and reliability he then becomes number two to his future girlfriend and sous chef Sophie.
I found it hard to stomach the violence within this novel and didn't understand how or why Tremain felt the need to write about these components. As they were sporadic and out of nowhere. Lev had no characteristics in being a violent man and somehow this seemed unjustified.
Without giving too much of the story away, Lev finds his own feet and meets other people less fortunate to himself. He finds himself returning back to his father country and the story does come full circle. Lev is far from becoming westernised, but we are lead to believe he finds happiness.
