Bought as part of a book deal at Waterstones. Genre billed as fiction but also as horror. Take your pick.
There is no synopsis on the cover of this book so this comes from Fantastic Fiction.
"'What is it? What does it want? Why is it angry with me?'
January 1937 Clouds of war are gathering over a fogbound London. Twenty-eight year old Jack is poor, lonely and desperate to change his life. So when he's offered the chance to be the wireless operator on an Arctic expedition, he jumps at it. Spirits are high as the ship leaves Norway: five men and eight huskies, crossing the Barents Sea by the light of the midnight sun. At last they reach the remote, uninhabited bay where they will camp for the next year. Gruhuken. But the Arctic summer is brief. As night returns to claim the land, Jack feels a creeping unease. One by one, his companions are forced to leave. He faces a stark choice. Stay or go. Soon he will see the last of the sun, as the polar night engulfs the camp in months of darkness. Soon he will reach the point of no return - when the sea will freeze, making escape impossible. And Gruhuken is not uninhabited. Jack is not alone. Something walks there in the dark."
Mr Flutterbies9 bought this and read it. He knows that I do not care for horror and especially psychological horror, and after he read it he advised me not to try this one. I am not sure that is a recommendation but I think it would show that he thought it had achieved its aim of terrifying the reader. I know I got more cuddles than usual when he was reading this book!
There is a plan afoot for this book.

CONTROLLED RELEASE NOTES:
Well, you know you are getting this but here it is. Appropriate for a Halloween NSS!
Dear Flutterbies9 many, many thanks for Dark Matter – Michelle Paver which was the last treat I pulled from your heavy parcel celebrating the UK BookCrossing, Yahoo Groups event, the Not So Secret Halloween/Celebrating Autumn Surprise 2011. I believe MrFlutterbies found this so my thanks to him! Wolf Brother is, I think, the first of her children’s books I read years ago and it was spellbinding. I cannot believe I have not hunted down the rest of them from the library but I suppose I have been waiting to come across others in the series in the charity shops. No joy so far! They must be so loved readers do not part with them I figure! Thanks indeed, a Private Message is on its way!
Searching for another possible Halloween book for a seasonal package and discovered this instead. Dark Matter actually seems just the thing for my current Halloween project so I consider it. Quotes from the cover read; ‘[A] deeply affecting tale of mental and physical isolation’ THE SUNDAY TIMES
‘A blood curdling ghost story, evocative not just of icy northern wastes but of a mind as, trapped, it turns on itself’ DAILY MAIL
OK Horror is not exactly my thing either Flutterbies9, I have dipped into this here and there and decided I’ll just whimp out rather than go cover-to-cover.
---------------------
Heading out for my – let’s-leave-this a-mystery – partner this week with its very own Halloween bookmark, wrapped in Halloweenish style and accompanied with some Halloween trinkets is the plan! Happy Halloween travels wee book!

This wasn't really to my taste, but I am always happy to read different books, so I am grateful for having read it.
