I grew up surrounded by groaning shelves, filled with a very eclectic mix of paperback fiction, out-of-date textbooks, first and second editions, mysteries, literary criticism and children's favourites. I was never short of things to read.

After finding more than 6 copies of the same book in my Mum's office, I vowed to resist the family tendency to save every book as if it were a gold brick. I try to sort through my shelves every year or so, and only keep the ones I love (or need) in my permanent collection.
