Thoroughly enjoyed this book although I was frustrated by the way she always kowtowed to her snobby, selfish older daughter Veda to the detriment of her younger one but it was a great story. I saw the original b & w film many years ago starring Joan Crawford and although it was mostly faithful to the book there were quite a few changes to adapt to the morals of the time! The film ending was also different to the book to make it more palatable to the audience no doubt.
The story is set in the early 30s to early 40s and it is hard to believe how prejudiced people were about almost everybody who didn't conform to an ideal and political correctness 50 or 60 years away.
There is a mini series based on this book currently showing on Sky (which I don't have) starring Kate Winslett which I'd love to see so will have to wait until it either comes out on DVD or is shown on one of the main channels.

Book passed on to a non-bookcrosser. You never know, one day it may be journaled again
