The movie V.I. WARSHAWSKI is what compelled me to pick up my first Warshawski mystery, GUARDIAN ANGEL. Now, after finishing HARD TIME, my fifth Warshawski novel, no movie will ever do credit to Paretsky's writing. Like me, find a couple of hours to read this or any of her books, and immerse yourself in her characters. This is far more entertaining than spending a couple of hours in a dark theater watching actors try to portray her characters. Whether or not you've been to Chicago, it doesn't matter. Just allow your imagination to transport you to a place gritty and challenging. That's Warshawski's Chicago. HARD TIME's plot is intricate and intense - you might need to take a break from the pages when your pulse starts to race, and the walls start to close in. But I don't want to give away one of the most surprising plot elements. Suffice to say that if you have read any of Warshawski's tales, you'll be as shocked as I was to find her in a very restrictive living environment. And once you've finished HARD TIME, you'll want to spend some easy time reading her other novels!
