It's a new month... time for some new bug fixes!
While Matt is still working on harnessing the book data that we all have contributed to, and making it available for searches, he's also been rather busy fixing other things, and even adding some nifty little features. Read all about it in this Announcements forum post. The Shipping News

Superb. A richly woven, engaging story with a strong sense of place and likeable characters, which draws the reader in. The protagonist is Quoyle, a jobless widower with two small children, who leaves New York for a very different life in frozen Newfoundland, where his family originated. The wildness and remoteness of the place is evoked so well you feel that you have visited. The small town strangeness adds both humour and some genuinely heart wrenching moments. Quoyle's anxiety about his troubled daughter, the toughness and vulnerability of the men whose livelihoods are vanishing before their eyes, the hopelessness of Quoyle's love for his dead wife - all are brought to life in a very real and moving way.
This is one of those books that reels you in slowly. It starts with gently dark humour and by the end you don't want it to finish. It manages to remain interesting without ever being implausible and is beautifully paced. The sparse, unfussy style works well and suits the setting. There are some genuine surprises and it contains just the right number of twists to keep up momentum. The writing is clever without being pretentious. But be warned, it leaves you with a strange yearning to visit seaboard Canada in winter...

To Portugal
Just received today. As soon as I read it, will post back here again. Thanks so much flambard. :D
I remembered this movie so vaguely, and I really don't know why. This is a book about death and suffering and about the sea, which I love. It is also a story about survival and friendship and family. Full of odd characters and cold places, it made me want to visit Newfoundland and discover if the days are always cold and wet or if there's a summer there after all. Thank you flambard for the chance to read this one
Going out to Canada to Fracula, winner of the International Canadian Literature Sweepstakes. It is a book from an american writter, but takes place in Newfoundland. Congratulations on winning and I hope you get many wonderful books. :P
Yay!!! It made it here safely, after almost a month!
I've heard about this book, but never read it, so looking forward to adding it to Mt. TBR,
Thank you so very much!
