From book cover:
Sam Richardson returns in 1946 from war in Burma to Wigton in Cumbria, he finds the town little changed. But the trauma of war has changed him. His six year old son barely remembers him and his wife has gained a sense of independence in her wartime jobs. They strive to adjust but love and loyalty are stretched to breaking-point in the taut and profoundly moving novel, which captures what millions experienced in the aftermath of the Second World War.

I thought this was extremely well written - a poignant novel, well constructed with a great climax.

Whatever you do, don't read the last page!

I came across this book in a Charity Shop (for sale). Decided that it was a book that had strayed into captivity and so had to be released back into the wild. We have a Christmas party (early because of relative going on world travels) this week-end. There's to be an anonymous present giving. So the book will be a good read (great fan of Melvyn Bragg on the radio) and introduce someone to the world of wild books.
