Blurb from back cover: "A magnificent saga of passion, heroism, and survival, Piers Anthony's ISLE OF WOMAN is a tale like no other ever written. It is nothing less than the story of humanity itself, from its savage origins to its troubled future, told through the lives of one family reborn throughout history."

I bought it at the Booklegger, a used bookstore in Huntsville, Alabama. It has a clipped corner, but you can still enjoy the gorgeous cover art.

I loved this book & highly recommend it. I'll definitely be keeping an eye out for SHAME OF MAN, the second in this series. Perhaps this one should go on a 'ray instead of into the wild... I do love the cover art, but she should have green eyes not blue! :)

Wow. I think this is by far the best Piers Anthony book that I have ever read. It shows his skills as a historian, scholar, and writer much more clearly that his lighter humorous SF novels do; however, I can still notice his familiar style of writing that we all love. Most of all, Isle of Woman displays Anthony's prolific imagination. The concept of following the parallel fates of two families through three million years of history may seem impossible to the common man, but not to Piers! This is a great book and I am looking forward to reading the next in the series.

Thanks again to TracyShannon for this bookray. I am sending it on to affinity4books on Monday.

Journal Entry 7 by affinity4books from Bryan, Texas USA on Sunday, July 17, 2005
Wow! What an excellent book. I too further respect Anthony as a writer after this one. I didn't think he could keep a coherent story line going over so much time and in so many different cultures and locales, but it all flows together masterfully. I especially liked the middle sections and the ones set on the rafts and in China. This is a very dense book in that there is a lot to take in, including info about evolution, history, cuture, etc. Some of the sections were so good that I wanted to savor them a while before reading the next. One minor gripe: the last section was a bit preachy. I felt the reunion which should have been moving became cluttered by the message. I think the story spoke for itself on the needs for conservation, compassion, etc, without it being made explicit. But overall a great book. Thanks TracyShannon! I'll be on the lookout for the rest of the series.
Mailing this week.

This was an absolutely fascinating book. It took me a while to get into it, but once I did, I could barely put it down. The author's imagination and love of history shine through. This book made me think about a lot of things, especially survival. It's a great story. I'll be mailing it on in a day or two. Thanks TracyShannon for sharing this book.

Very interesting book with unique method of writing. But I think it suddenly jumped into the future and many important events of 19th and 20th century were ignored. The future was also so harsh, I'd rather think of something better because I never like to lose hope. Man eating man ? That was too disgusting... no, I think there's hope... we'll never reach that point.

Journal Entry 15 by RonOren from Wassenaar, Zuid-Holland Netherlands on Wednesday, October 19, 2005
Great book! I don't think I have to add much to what all the other readers have already said about new respect for Anthony's ability as a writer ;-). I really liked the fact that the same two families kept coming back in the stories; for a while I thought he pretended that every story was a separate one, without ties to "recollections" of the same person, but I liked the dreams, or undefined feelings that showed that Blaze and Ember remained the same.

I have to agree with affinity4books that the end was somewhat overdone. But, in fact, for me it wasn't that necessary that Blaze and Ember got back together; it sufficed that the families met up, in India. I'm afraid the future as he describes it, may be more probable than most of us want to admit though... (although I would be pleasantly surprised if mankind would manage to overpopulate itself into trouble, rather than simply kill ourselves as we do now).

But enough of this moralizing! I really enjoyed the book, and will be on the look-out for the other 4 volumes as well. Thanks a lot for sharing it, TracyShannon!

I'll send it to DreamSE22 soonish; I do have an address, but lack a bit of time to go to the PO. I'll do my best, though ;-)

Journal Entry 19 by DreamworldBooks on Wednesday, November 16, 2005
Wow, excellent book! This was the best thing I've ever read by Piers Anthony, and I am VERY excited to start Shame of Man.

The first few chapters reminded me of James A Michener's Hawaii and I wondered what I was getting myself into, but soon enough I was unable to put the book down. I didn't bother reading the book's synopsis, so I was confused at first about why the characters were living for so long until I read the back. At that point I began to enjoy the book more for its creativity.

My favorite chapter was near the middle and introduced the character of Seed, whereas I grew slightly bored for a few chapters afterward when we came back to Ember and those taking place in Asia.

However, contrary to what some of the previous journalers thought, I loved the ending and thought it was classic Piers Anthony. The ending made the book even better, which was a surprise! Thanks so much for sharing! I'll be sending the book to the next person in the ring within a week.

This book and series was recommended to me by one of the musicians I collaborate with, and I am pleased I finally became privy to Piers Anthony. This work is truly an education in the realm of evolution and the priniciples of re-birth. Anthony with conviction, deconstructs all the disparate time periods proving he is both ambitious and accomplished in his quest.
From evolutionary emergence to the not so distant future of today, I confess he is quite formidible in this profoundly unique genre of storytelling. I was beguiled by Mister Anthony's methods of conveyance. The reincarnation of his characters from Chinese Dynasties and the Stone Age and Ice Age et al until we finally arrive in 2021, was quite the journey. This would generally not be classified as my cup of tea, but now all I can say is top us up again!
Cheers for letting me be a part of the global trek of this delightful read, Its 9 stars from Veronica!
I have PMed Shix and await her address and will post this off respectively.
happy reads.
