Arrived safely, and I'm very pleased to have another book by Naipaul!
For me, this is the kind of book I can't put down. Naipaul is such a good writer, and his characters and settings are almost always presented so well that they quickly come to seem familiar - but just a bit. There's still enough strangeness that you need to keep reading to find out more.
This was an immersion in a time of upheaval, the rise of African nationalism. For me, the most interesting element was the Domain of the state, beginning with such lavish aspirations for a Conference Center, or a technological university - something marvelous and modern. This is where Salim first meets Yvette, with whom he starts a love affair. But under the bright sun of daylight, the Domain begins to show its cracks and structural flaws, and the political situation likewise declines.
But that's just one person's opinion. Future readers, what do YOU think of this book?
