Given to me by a neighbour. I've already read it, so will send it on its way soon.
I found this on some wish lists. It will be heading off to Scotland this afternoon.
Thanks so much for this bluenoser - merry Christmas!
A very engrossing story to read over the Christmas period. I enjoyed the first half best; liking all the upstairs downstairs stuff. It is always interesting to read about how World War I decimated that fairy tale world. Because that is what this novel is about I think - the ending of an old kind of social order. Grace's own life story shows those changes well, and also the sense of loss that accompanies them.
Of course the main focus is on the Hartford sisters, and I found them to be well-written characters, though I would have liked to lean a little more about Emmeline. Just being picky though, scenes involving Hannah where Grace was not present seemed far too well-realised to be just the result of the former's confidences.
