I initially thought "Oh no not another book which switches the central character each chapter". But the story of how black domestics were treated in 1960s America was convincing and I was hooked. Subsequently I found each was fully developed and the stories blended into the central narrative nicely. I was caught up in the story so much that I read it very quickly but was a little disappointed at the end which appeared not to tie up all the loose ends.
Passed on to friend in Exeter who has since lent the book on again.
