It was quite certainly another breathtaking book by Robert Goddard, set in the 19th century. It is about the matter to proof one man's, James Davenall's, identity, which was in the times without DNA tests no simple thing, especially, when nobody from the family is willing or able to acknowledge him.
Although it was gripping to read, I found it difficult to jump back and forth between the different narratives and the court case was long drawn.
From Amazon:
The arrival of a stranger in William Trenchard's life threatens to destroy all he holds most dear. The stranger claims to be Sir James Davenall, who was once engaged to Trenchard's wife, who supposedly committed suicide years before and his return reveals dark secrets about the Davenall family.
