L. P Hartley's powerful novel opens with Leo, a man in his sixties, looking back to his childhood and his first glimpse of the passion and intrigue behind the enigmatic mask of adulthood. In the summer of 1900, as a young boy, the narrator is staying at a freiend's house in Norfolk, a time which is to change his life irrevocably. Befriended by a farmer, Leo inadvertently begins to act as a messenger between him and the beautiful marian up at the house. Proud of the trust placed in him by two people he adores, Leo is drawn in deeper and deeper. A pawn in their dangerous game of deceit and desire, his involvement leads to a premature, devastating awakening.
A classic story of lost innocence, blighted hopes and the pangs of youth.

WILD RELEASE NOTES:
It's a few years since I read this. I remember that I loved it though! It has the same sort of feel as The Remains of the Day in that the narrator is looking back to a world and culture that has largely disappeared. Heart-rending and full of regret. Beautiful.
I'll leave it on the BookCrossing stand in the Harris Library.
