This atmospheric novel moves from present day, when Trond is 67 and preparing for winter season, to a bright yet conflicted summer of 1948. His loving yet ever more complex relationship with his father pulls the story along. As the store of memories goes deeper, nostalgia becomes more complicated based on the events of that summer. Beautfully written. Makes me want to visit Norway!

A 'coming of age' book from the perspective of an older man reflecting on his youth and his current state of affairs and coming to terms with his life. Very well written, although I find Petterson's style to be a bit difficult.
