Reading this book now...
Both my husband and I enjoyed reading this book.
Here's what I wrote after I read this book:
I thoroughly love reading books by Pat Conroy. I get carried away by the scope of his stories, the way he describes relationships between his characters, and the attention he gives to the environment in which those individuals live. South of Broad is the story of one man's love of his hometown of Charleston, South Carolina. Despite awkwardness as a child, Leo King, also known as Toad, gradually develops a close circle of friends who battle difficult issues. Intertwined with their personal stories are emerging social problems such as effects of differing class status, uneasy race relations, homosexuality and other even more difficult issues which I'd rather not reveal as they might be spoilers. The novel heats up as some of the more liberal characters go head to head against the more conservative ones.
Be forewarned that this book is about 500 pages. Know that you’ll need to take a bit of time to get to know Leo King’s friends and learn how the decisions they make affect Leo's life. Not always comfortable reading due to its subject matter, Conroy's writing is nevertheless elegant and touching. I would give this book a hearty thumbs up for anyone who enjoys a novel with sparkling characters well defined by their setting.
